Native Nation

Dr. Alan Garfinkel Gold has been an active partner with Native Americans in California and the Great Basin for many years.  His pioneering work with the Kawaiisu and Tubatulabal was recognized by the California Governor's Award for Historic Preservation in 2011.

Previously he partnered with the Owens Valley Career Development Centers providing presentations and leading field trips to cultural heritage sites.

His award-winning documentary film, Talking Stone, provides voice to Native people on the value, significance, and general importance of cultural heritage sites.

Most recently, Dr. Garfinkel showcased and paid tribute to the extraordinary aesthetics and  sophisticated technological achievements of California Indian Basketweavers in his efforts as editor of the $250,000 and 10 years in development, coffee table book, featuring 60 weavers from throughout California and the Great Basin.  The volume has over 600 archival black and white and full color photographs.
